Construction of the custom handmade Arcos table.
Author: StigLThis is the Arcos Dining Table we made for a customer.
Arcos table in Brazilian bloodwood. This design has become one of our standbys. I designed it from ideas that I have received from looking at Roman sculptures in Paris, France.
The name come from the four arches, surrounding the pedestal in the middle. Hence the name "Arcos".
The arches are made up from nine strips of wood that are slightly under 1/8 inch in thickness.Th e strips are then glued together with a urea – resin glue in a press where we use 12 C-clamps.This design makes for an extremely strong base despite its light appearance.
Picture below is from another Arcos table, again in Brazilian bloodwood. Each arch is made up from eight laminated 1/8 inch thick bloodwood strips. The light wood in the middle is a 1/8 inch maple "racing stripe" put there for effect. This base alone, took us a minimum of two full 60 hours weeks, (240 hours) to make from cutting the first plank.
The bloodwood is extremely hard to cut and mill. It is hard on all cutting edges but we have good sharpening tools.
Still, it is a labor of love. The fragrance from this wood when cut is like fresh lilacs mixed with the odor of tobacco.
