About Us
I was born and raised in northern
My grandfather made simple country furniture from birch, fir, spruce and to us in the north, the very exotic Danish beech. His furniture was mostly made in a paint grade finish. From his shop the products were taken to Hanna Olofsdotter a lady close to the small town square. There she painted the furniture, mostly in blue and decorated them with a floral motif known as “rosmålning”. My main task in the shop was to keep the large potbelly stove going for heat and keeping the hide glue hot.
I have no formal education as a woodworker. What I know I learned from my grandfather and in school. For a period of six years we boys had a total of six hours per week in “slöjd” or wood shop in English. The teacher was strict but a fair and good man. We had no power tools, only hand tools that we kept sharp by ourselves. I loved woodshop almost as much as skiing.
In retrospect, I’d like to change my statement about having a formal education. I do indeed have a formal education in the fine craft of woodworking. Our teacher told us to hand plane a rough birch plank into a perfectly flat and square piece that could be used as a rail, stick or frame part. I now put that skill to good use in our shop.
My wife Vieno started Scandia Interiors, an import / retail company. That was in the early sixties. She imported fine furniture from
Slowly but surely I was drawn into woodworking due to boredom with retirement. My shop grew in relation to how many woodworking shows I visited. Finally I had to admit that I am addicted to the fragrance of newly cut wood and shellac.
In June of 2007 my daughter Renya decided to join me in the shop. I now had a partner and student. The result is that now we are turning out fine furniture in our shop that we are very proud of. If you go to the shop page you will see our arrangements and machinery. Enjoy the tour.
